We have another beading book review for you today! Metallic Seed Bead Splendor by Nancy Zellers is aimed at anyone interested in beadwork, particularly those that love using seed beads in gold, bronze and pewter colors.
Metallic Seed Bead Splendor – content overview
This book is broken down into 29 beautiful beaded jewelry projects, each one made up in a metallic color to reflect the look of glamorous fine metal jewelry. The book has a short introduction section which explains how you can use the book and what type of seed beads you’ll be using.
There is also a foreword section about metallic beads which explains the different types of finishes you can get with metallic seed beads, such as solid opaques, silver-lined or transparent. The different finishes can dramatically change the final color and look of the finished jewelry piece, so this is handy information to know.
After that, the plethora of seed bead projects begins! Each project comes complete with a photo, detailed list of materials, what beadwork stitches you’ll need to use and directions on how to make the project.
Speaking of beadwork stitches, there is a basic stitch section at the back of the book along with an overview of the types of jewelry-making or beading tools that you may need.
Metallic Seed Bead Splendor – the pros
Without a doubt, this is a visually beautiful book! The front cover just exudes sparkle and glamour and invites you to look inside. And once you flip open the cover you won’t be disappointed with the types of projects that you’ll find.
Just about every project in this book looks so luxurious and striking. Some of the jewelry pieces seriously wouldn’t look out of place on a catwalk. There is such a mixture in here; many projects reflect a delicate vintage look while others have an element of avant-garde style to them.
Take a look at this gold lace cuff bracelet for example – a snapshot from the book. This project uses a netting technique to create a vintage inspired lacy bracelet that could transform an outfit into something totally extravagant. The bracelet looks like it’s worth a million dollars, helped along of course by those awesome gold colored seed beads.
The quality of the photos in this book is really outstanding and shows each jewelry piece off to its best. The patterns are clear and easy to follow.
This is a book that delivers on what you’d expect from the cover. It’s packed full of projects, aimed at every level of beader.
Metallic Seed Bead Splendor – the considerations
One thing to consider if you’re thinking about buying this book is that if you want to use other colors instead of metallics, you could do so; however the look of the finished piece may not be the same. This book is great for those beaders who love working with metallics but may not be quite as good for those that enjoy working with a varied range of colors.
If you’re a complete beginner, you might want to wait until you’ve learned some basic stitches before buying this book. Although there is a beading basics section at the back of the book, this may not be enough to get you started. You could check out some beading videos online first or try a book like Mastering Beadwork by Carol Huber Cypher which contains lots of information about different off-loom beading techniques.
If you love beading, Metallic Seed Bead Splendor is definitely a book to have in your collection. Even if you’re not into fine metal look jewelry yourself, these projects would make incredible gifts for those special people in your lives.
